Chapter Eight

Apparently, once the Bartons made up their minds to sell their ranch they didn’t want to waste any time. Because Brady got word the next morning that his offer had been accepted.

He arranged to meet the local lawyer who was handling the sale at the Barton place after breakfast to sign some papers, and once he’d had a hearty meal of waffles, eggs and sausages with the McDermot men, he decided to walk across the fields to keep the appointment.

It was a hike of a little over two miles from one door to the other, and he could have driven Matt’s truck. Matt had offered it. But after the previous day’s snow, the sun was bright in a crystal-clear blue sky, and Brady opted to walk because it seemed like a good chance to clear his head.

And he desperately needed to clear his head. But not of thoughts of buying the Barton ranch. That whole deal had gone through with surprisingly little thought. Instead his mind was filled with something completely different.

It was filled with Kate McDermot. And since talking about Claudia the night before, it was also filled with the reminder that had been.

A reminder that had stayed with him all through the night. A reminder that was still with him this morning.

A reminder about what had gone on with him after Claudia had bailed on him.

He’d gone into some kind of conquest mode that had come out of an obsession to get her back. He wasn’t proud of it, but that was how it was.

He’d kept calling her, sending her e-mails, sending her flowers, gifts, messages through friends. He’d put all his energy into wooing her in any way he could come up with.

Just recalling it all now made his hackles rise.

At the time it had seemed like he was meeting a challenge. As if that was all it would take to win her back. But that hadn’t been how things were, and he’d had to finally face the fact that her feelings for him weren’t the same as his feelings for her. Regardless of what she’d said or how she’d acted before the breakup. And in retrospect it felt degrading to have gone to such lengths for a woman who hadn’t wanted him.

Sure, he’d finally come to the point where he was over her, but what he’d gone through before that was something he never wanted to do again. What he needed to think through as he walked across the open fields that separated the McDermot ranch house from the house that would be his, was whether or not that might be happening again, with Kate, even though he didn’t want it to.

He wasn’t in the midst of the same kind of full-court press, he knew that. But in a more subtle way he was sort of wooing her. And not without what seemed to be some reluctance on her part.

Okay, so there wasn’t total reluctance on her part the way there had been on Claudia’s once she’d moved out.
